Child therapy or coaching?

Is it the child that needs child therapy or coaching or the parent that needs coaching?

As new parents, we are quite often shocked at the dichotomy of emotions we experience in the early months of parenthood, especially when we may not have a lot of input or borrowed experience from our own parents. Our feelings go from sheer joy and happiness to fear and worry within hours.

‘All kids need is a little help, a little hope, and someone who believes in them.’ – Magic Johnson

When a new father told the doctor how relieved he was that the 9 months of stress were finally over, the doctor replied ‘It’s the next 50 years that you’re likely to worry about!’

Why is that? It’s because we’re biologically programmed to focus our whole being on nurturing our children to ensure they survive and thrive. We worry about their first coughs, sneezes and sleepless nights, often for no logical or obvious reason. Frankly, we were not provided with a parenting manual when they were born and our fears can run out of control.

‘Everybody is a genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.’ – Albert Einstein

The stress this causes can easily be transferred to the child in many unconscious ways. Children are usually very sensitive and can pick up on the slightest nuance, mood change, difference in body language, even facial expression.

Further, many of us are not experts in controlling our anger and children are experts in pushing us to the point of explosion! This not only affects us, but adversely effects the child, sometimes into adulthood.

‘When little people are overwhelmed by their emotions, it’s our job to share our calm, not join their chaos.’ – J R Knost

How can we prevent this and thus protect ourselves from the damage we can cause by allowing our stress to run freely, and at the same time protect the child from long-term mental damage? TMC coaches provide a toolbox of methods for coping and avoiding unnecessary traumatic events for both parent and child.

Where a child’s issues have already developed, TMC coaches can provide help and support to enable the parent to best deal with the issue for both themselves and the child and also methods that they can directly help the child with.

TMC believes that empowering parents in this way, intervention with the child is often not necessary.

Child Therapy: The ‘Blowaway Technique’

Where the parent feels unable to cope and would prefer to receive therapy for their child, TMC offers a premium service that involves the Blowaway Technique, a therapy invented by Neil French in the 1970’s and successfully used by countless therapists since.

Children are amazing subjects when it comes to hypnosis and hypnotherapy, due to being extremely imaginative. They often respond excellently to therapy with incredible results.

‘Behind every young child who believes in themselves is a parent who believed first.’  – Matthew L Jacobson

TMC sees children and teenagers for hypnotherapy treatments between the ages of 8 to 16. Children under the age of 16 are always accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Usually, we like to see the parent that has the best connection with child or who has more of a prominent role in the child’s upbringing. The parent is encouraged to participate in the session in the same way as the child.

This single hypnotherapy session, The Blowaway Technique, has been designed in mind for the use with children to help them resolve their anxieties, worries or phobias. The therapy, including hypnosis, is aimed at removing hurdles from the child, so that the child will eventually grow up to be the best person they possibly can be.

‘Your kids require most of all for you to love them for who they are, not spend your whole time trying to correct them.’ – Bill Ayers

The Blowaway Technique session is a very gentle, yet powerful type of therapy.  During the session, the child is guided into a calm and relaxed state, they’re encouraged to take a deep breath and ‘blow away’ any negative intense emotions or feelings that are ‘bottled up’. This results in reduced anxiety.

The session ends with relaxation and positively phrased suggestions for both the child and parent. It is a fun, interesting, informal and very liberating experience for both the child and parent.

‘It is easier to repair strong children, than to repair broken men.’ – Frederick Douglass
