Moving you from one resource to another in St Albans & Chichester

What actually is Neuro Linguistic Programming?

Neuro: ‘Of the mind’; Linguistic: ‘Relating to language’; Programming: ‘Providing coded instructions for the automatic performance of a task or function’. Neuro Linguistic Programming.

In essence, the Neuro Linguistic Programming will analyse the way you model the world around you. Your mind is re-programmed to a more positive model, using specific language patterns as well as certain mental tools such as hypnotic trance, in order to cause fast-change of any negative habit patterns or unhelpful traits you wish to change rapidly, or to fast-track performance improvement in any areas of your life you wish to enhance.

‘When you want new results, it requires new thinking.’ – Dr Richard Bandler

It is the process of helping people to move from an unwanted resource to a positive outcome, whether it be something personal or professional. It can also involve drawing out strengths, helping the individual to bypass personal and professional barriers and limits in order to achieve their peak performance and facilitating them to function more effectively as an individua or member of a team, thus, effective NLP mastery requires an emphasis on both task and relationship.

NLP is vehicle that carries a person from a starting location to a desired result.

‘NLP coaching-reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn’t go away’ – Philp K. Dick

NLP skills fit well into coaching, because it encapsulates three important elements in its title. ‘Neuro’ is the mind, our thinking. ‘Linguistic’ is language, how we use it to influence others and ourselves. ‘programming’ is not about computers, but about how we sequence our actions to attain our goals.

‘If you’re not willing to risk the unusual, you’ll have to settle for the ordinary.’ – Jim Rohn

So, NLP in short is the study of how language affects how we think and therefore our actions. NLP proposes that change can be approached from three directions by changing the way a person talks about an issue and by changing his or her behaviour. NLP uses a number of distinctions that are helpful in coaching.

How it functions

The most basic idea of NLP concerns different perspectives, called perceptual positions. The first position is your point of view, your values, goals, beliefs, and interests.

The second position is how you imagine another person thinks and feels. It is the basis of empathy and rapport. When you take the second position you speak for the person whose viewpoint you are taking. You also mirror the physiology and voice tone of that person .

The third position is the systemic position that can look at both first and second position. This is an objective view of the relationship between the first and second, which you can adopt without identifying with either. Each position is another point of view, using a different physiology and different language for each.

‘Sometimes it’s the smallest decisions that can change your life forever.’ – Keri Russell

It helps clients get in touch with their authentic values and goals through the first position. The second position helps clients understand other people’s points of view, especially in relationship problems. The third position is used as an objective position where clients evaluate different relationships, see themselves ‘from the outside’ and can coach themselves. The third position is a very useful tool to help clients describe their present state in specific, descriptive and unjudgmental terms.

It will allow you to change your habits and approaches to certain aspects of your life using some of the methodology explained.

‘Our life is shaped by our mind. We become what we think.’ – Buddha

Whatever you would like to improve, whether it be something that you would like to change or something you would like to enhance, NLP will provide rapid and lasting change.
