A few years ago, the largest study ever conducted into quitting smoking was undertaken. It studied nearly everything from the normal; will power, nicotine patches, positive thinking, placebos, chewing gum etc, and the conclusion was that hypnosis and hypnotherapy came out as the most effective smoking cessation technique.
Have you found it hard to stop smoking?
In our experience, generally most people find it hard to quit smoking because they receive no immediate reward for doing so and they get no immediate feelings of reward, other than they may live for an extra ten years, (using future time as a benefit is often intangible for us).
Here’s an analogy, that will make sense shortly: if somebody offered you £10 for your well-loved and expensive watch, would you take it? No, of course you wouldn’t. So, let’s increase the offer to £20? £50? What about £500? At some point, if the amount you’re being offered keeps rising, sooner or later the price would reach an acceptable amount for your watch, even if it was a of sentimental value or a present from someone you loved dearly.

You wouldn’t give it up for less than its value. You’d want to be adequately compensated for your watch. The better the deal you negotiate, the better you begin to feel about it. The worse the deal you negotiate, the worse you feel about it.
Part of you wants to smoke because you enjoy it. You need and love it and you’ve probably done it for so many years that you can’t remember when you started. Smoking helps relieve your stress and tension. It makes you feel confident, when you are feeling insecure and calms you down when you’ve been feeling stressed. Smoking can act as a reward after a tough day at work and makes you feel whole, and complete. Why would you want to give up all those benefits that smoking gives you and receive no initial reward for stopping smoking? Think of the expensive watch.
Why do you want to stop smoking?
You might think that by quitting smoking you would live a little longer and feel a little healthier, get nagged a little less from your partner or kids, save a few pounds, or have nicer smelling breath. The trouble is none of those reasons bring immediate rewards.
For example, you don’t feel healthier, fitter, richer, nicer smelling, less nagged the day after quitting smoking. That doesn’t sound like a good deal to me! Give up something you love, and in five years’ time you may just feel a little healthier! It’s no wonder people often get stressed, moody, stroppy, angry and depressed when they quit smoking by willpower alone. People want their rewards and benefits NOW, not in five, ten or twenty years’ time.
